May 18th and 19th

Big change from last weekend. Water temps at the two lakes I fished over the were 64-65 degrees. I targeted pike on Saturday and trout/salmon Sunday. Primarily calm winds both days with clouds giving way to sunshine mid morning. I caught a small pike Saturday and missed two others. I know musky is considered the fish of a 1000 casts but I can argue that spring time pike are just as hard without weeds, especially at my lake of choice these days. The 5 rainbows I caught today were small. As soon as the sun came out and it warmed up the bigger fish stopped hitting. The best part of my day was coming back to the truck. When I arrived there was a Baltimore Oriole on my passenger side mirror and wouldn’t move when I opened the windows, just perched there, As I started unloading my boat it perched itself on the roof of my truck and watched me during the entire process. Finishing up and half eaten by black flies I jumped into the truck and turned the key. The next thing I know this fella flew into my cab and came within inches of my nose hovering like a humming bird and flew out of the cab in a flash. Trying to process all these things and I noticed my mirror. What I think happened is Romeo saw his image in the mirror and thought he was either an intruder or a good looking mate. Either way he had himself a heck of a morning fighting that mirror.
